The material and colors you select will set the mood for the entire home and enhance your family’s enjoyment of every corner of the house. You’ll want floors that you love, of course, so don’t choose the flooring for your home without taking these things into consideration.

POPULAR FLOORING TRENDS

Favorite flooring options include hardwood, carpet and tile, and each has its advantages. Which you choose depends on personal preference and the intended use of the room. Consider these facts about each before making a decision on which flooring option is best for your custom home design.

Wood Floors

These floors are typically engineered hardwood that can mimic the look and feel of nearly any woodgrain. These floors are durable, look sleek and clean and are resistant to stains. The wide variety of colors and styles available from gleaming hardwood to country style wood that is made to look weathered and worn. Dark woods give the room a warm, homey feel, while light colors can brighten any room, making it look spacious and airy.

Carpet

Carpet is warm on little feet on cold winter mornings and makes sprawling out on the floor for TV time or make-believe play more comfortable. Carpets can be purchased in nearly any color imaginable, making it easy to vamp up your sense of style. They also stain easily and can show wear in high-traffic areas. In addition, carpets require more maintenance and aren’t suitable for high humidity areas as they can get damp and smelly.

Tile

Tile comes in a wide array of colors and designs and can give a room a crisp, clean look. Tile resists scratches and stains and can open up the room. It also tends to be cold on the feet and can be slippery when wet.

Carpets are a great choice for bedrooms as they keep the floor warm and create a cozy, comfy look to the room.

FLOOR CHOICES BY ROOM

Varying your flooring according to the room makes perfect sense, as it allows you to use the flooring that bests suits the need of the room. Check out the recommendations for floor type according to the room.

Mud Rooms, Family Rooms and Dining Rooms: These rooms are best suited for wood floors, but you may also choose to do them in tile. Carpets are not recommended as they stain easily and may be difficult to keep clean in these busy rooms.

Kitchen, Bath and Laundry Rooms: Tile is the flooring of choice for bathroom and laundry rooms due to the high levels of humidity. They are easy to clean and always make the room look clean and bright. Some prefer tile in the kitchen, but don’t overlook hardwood as a kitchen choice to give your kitchen an earthy or down-home feel.

Bedrooms

Carpets are a great choice for bedrooms as they keep the floor warm and create a cozy, comfy look to the room. Use bright carpets in children’s rooms to add visual appeal and go with more subdued tones for teens or adults.

HARDWOOD VS. CARPET

Some areas of the home, like the family room or living room, look great with either hardwood or carpets. If you are on the fence about which one you should choose, consider the upkeep. Carpets require more care with frequent shampooing and vacuuming, especially if you have family pets.

But carpets add more cushioning for toddlers and babies who spend long hours playing on the floor. Carpeting also muffles the sound of the pitter-patter of little feet or the click of dog paws on the floor.

On the other hand, you may want to go with hardwood so that it matches the flooring in your kitchen and dining room, plus you’ll save some time when it comes to cleaning.
